Government Accountability

Transparency, restraint, and accountability — at every level of government.

Connecticut residents pay some of the highest taxes in the country, yet too often receive little clarity about how their money is spent or who benefits from it.

When government lacks transparency and accountability, costs rise, trust erodes, and politically connected insiders gain while taxpayers are left footing the bill.

The Libertarian Party of Connecticut believes accountable government is not a partisan issue — it is essential to protecting liberty, controlling costs, and restoring public trust.

The Problem

Across state and local government, Connecticut suffers from:

  • Opaque budgeting and complex spending structures
  • Regulatory agencies insulated from public oversight
  • Political favoritism and corporate cronyism
  • Limited consequences for waste, mismanagement, or abuse of power
  • A growing disconnect between taxpayers and decision-makers

These failures contribute directly to high taxes, rising utility costs, and declining confidence in public institutions.

Radical Transparency for Taxpayers

Taxpayers deserve to know exactly where their money goes.

We support clear, accessible, and itemized tax transparency at the state and local level — so residents can see how much they pay and what programs, agencies, and obligations their taxes fund.

This includes:

  • Itemized annual tax statements showing how state and local taxes are allocated
  • Plain-language explanations of major spending categories
  • Publicly accessible, searchable budgets and contracts
  • Clear disclosure of long-term liabilities, including pensions and debt

Transparency is a check on waste. When spending is visible, accountability follows.

Ending Cronyism and Regulatory Capture

Too often, government agencies meant to protect consumers instead protect entrenched interests. This regulatory capture drives up costs, limits competition, and shields failures from scrutiny.

We support:

  • Ending special treatment and subsidies for politically connected corporations
  • Opening regulated markets to real competition
  • Requiring public justification and review of major regulatory decisions
  • Strict conflict-of-interest rules for regulators and policymakers

Government should serve the public — not act as a gatekeeper for favored insiders.

Real Oversight, Real Consequences

Accountability requires more than audits after the fact.

We support reforms that ensure:

  • Independent oversight bodies with real investigative authority
  • Require government programs to be reviewed regularly and re-approved before they continue
  • Clear performance benchmarks for state programs
  • Consequences for misuse of public funds or abuse of authority

Programs and agencies should exist because they work — not because they have always existed.

Local Control & Citizen Oversight

Decisions are best made close to the people affected by them.

We support:

  • Strengthening local oversight of spending and land-use decisions
  • Reducing unfunded mandates imposed by the state on municipalities
  • Expanding public access to meetings, records, and decision-making processes
  • Protecting whistleblowers who expose waste or misconduct

Citizens should not need specialized knowledge or political connections to hold their government accountable.

A Culture of Accountability

Government accountability is not about punishment — it is about prevention.

Clear rules, transparency, and limited authority reduce opportunities for abuse before they occur.

Connecticut does not need more power concentrated in Hartford. It needs better safeguards, clearer limits, and a renewed respect for the people who fund government in the first place.

Transparent government protects liberty, controls costs, and earns public trust.

The Libertarian Party of Connecticut is committed to accountability that works — not excuses that persist.
