Liberty for Connecticut — Our Platform
A practical, voter-first plan to restore freedom, affordability, and accountability.
This page is the Libertarian Party of Connecticut’s platform overview. You don’t need to agree with every item to get involved — start with the issues that matter most to you.
Civil Liberties Cost of Living & Taxes Government Accountability
The Libertarian Party of Connecticut stands for maximum individual freedom and accountable, limited government. We reject the failed two-party status quo of high taxes, expanding bureaucracy, political favoritism, and the steady erosion of personal and property rights.
Our platform advances practical, targeted reforms that lower the cost of living, protect civil liberties, empower families and businesses, restore local control, and end cronyism in Hartford. These are our legislative priorities for a freer, more affordable Connecticut.
Legislative Goals
These proposals reflect areas where Connecticut government has grown more expensive, less accountable, and less responsive to voters.
The Libertarian Party of Connecticut urges the General Assembly to enact the following reforms:
1. School Choice & Education Freedom
Connecticut’s one-size-fits-all public education system fails too many families while costing taxpayers dearly. We support universal school choice, empowering parents through education savings accounts or vouchers to direct funding to the best option—public, charter, private, homeschool, or online.
We call for eliminating state mandates unrelated to core education, restoring local control, and replacing the inequitable Educational Cost Sharing (ECS) formula with equal per-pupil funding statewide. Education decisions should be made by parents and elected local boards—not Hartford bureaucrats.
2. Eminent Domain Reform — End Kelo-Style Takings
As the birthplace of Kelo v. New London, Connecticut must lead by banning eminent domain for private economic development or any non-public use.
Private property is a fundamental right. No government or politically connected developer should be allowed to seize land from owners against their will. Stronger protections will prevent abuse of power and restore trust in government.
3. Electoral Reform for Fair Representation
Connecticut’s winner-take-all system entrenches two-party dominance and silences many voters. We support reforms such as ranked-choice voting, open primaries, and proportional representation to allow more candidates and ideas to compete fairly.
A more competitive, multi-party system better reflects voters’ views, reduces polarization, and strengthens democracy.
4. Personal Choice & Privacy
Individuals own their bodies and peaceful choices. We oppose laws that criminalize victimless behavior and burden entrepreneurs, consumers, and property owners.
We support ending excessive licensing and regulation, protecting privacy from government surveillance and data collection, and respecting adults’ right to make personal decisions—so long as they do not initiate force or fraud against others.
5. Fiscal Responsibility & Tax Relief
Connecticut’s chronic budget crises and mounting debt are unsustainable. We support a comprehensive reassessment of state services, including privatizing or decentralizing non-essential functions, cutting waste, and opposing all tax hikes and unfunded mandates on municipalities.
Public-sector union contracts must be negotiated responsibly to ensure long-term solvency. Connecticut needs predictable, low-tax policies that encourage growth—not policies that drive families and businesses out of the state.
6. Criminal Justice Reform
Criminal penalties should be limited to acts involving force, fraud, or theft. We support ending the failed War on Drugs, reducing police militarization, and addressing abuses of qualified immunity.
Justice should focus on restitution, rehabilitation, and accountability—not revenue generation or moral policing. Law enforcement must protect rights, not erode them.
7. Juvenile & Family Court Reform
The state should never incentivize family separation. We oppose funding structures that reward agencies or attorneys for removals rather than reunification.
Juvenile proceedings should be a true last resort—fast, transparent, and grounded in due process. Families harmed by system abuse deserve accountability and reform.
8. Healthcare Freedom
Government mandates and third-party payers drive up costs and restrict choice. We support transparent, market-based healthcare, including upfront pricing, direct primary care models, and eliminating certificate-of-need laws that block competition.
Healthcare decisions belong with patients and doctors—not politicians, insurers, or bureaucrats.
These reforms reflect core libertarian principles — self-ownership, non-aggression, and voluntary exchange — applied to the real challenges facing Connecticut today.
You deserve better than endless tax hikes, regulatory sprawl, and insider politics.
